From a data collection perspective, we can get more done in a few direct emails than in a couple of hours of using competitor research tools.

This Is Sensitive Information…

I agree! We run several sites ourselves. We never share information about individual sites analyzed during the course of the project or site specific innovations. In reality, there are enough moving parts to a successful website and the value of these parts changes fast enough over time that precisely replicating the path a competitor took is nearly pointless. It’s better to start with a blank piece of paper and build a plan from current best practices. For example, good luck cloning a site using the SEO tactics from 3 – 4 years ago; these are significantly less likely to work (although that site may still rank due to other reasons). What we can share with you is best practices from across the industry, acquired through interviews and competitor research, that you will need to test and validate for your site.
